The Feast
|
Its not Christmas or someone's birthday; so
what's the occasion?
|
|
As soon as we arrive they bring the roasted
pig inside. The table is filled with yuca, moros, and malanga tostones.
Having just been slow roasted in the ground over red hot coals,
the poor creature is laid on the home-made wooden table and removed
from his long cooking pole.
Many neighbors are there to help prepare and serve,
the extra hands are needed.
So what's this celebration all about? Friends,
just because we are friends...

|
The guests go first; they insist we fill our
plates. It is announced we must eat the whole pig - none can be
left over.
Our server makes sure I get some of the rib meat
and the crispy skin. I assume this is his favorite.
I sit on the floor and enjoy as I take in, not
the food, but our hosts. A small dog has chosen an advantageous
place by the front door. She acts as though she has learned from
experience. I try the crunchy skin - my little four-legged friend
likes it much better than I
|

I can see into the sky through the cracks in
the walls. Its raining harder now... Water pours in from the rain
blowing against a closed shutter. No glass, no screen but no one
pays attention, they just avoid the little stream that is gathering
on the floor. A few drops off the roof add to it. They need the
rain. It's good for the rice and yucca growing nearby.
I'm stuffed with good food but still my hosts
prod me to eat more. Then, playfully I'm offered the pig's head
to eat. I play back and we take a picture. We laugh together.
As we are finishing our seconds I notice that
only now our servers taking their food. There's not much meat left.

Breaking bread together with friends
Most of our group can't communicate with our hosts
but we know there is a deeper bond we can all feel. We share the
same Spirit.
Someone starts singing so we all do. Some in Spanish,
some in English - it doesn't matter.
Jesus comes in and we all feel Him.
Amazing Grace - How sweet!
